NKPC’S POSITION ON ANIMAL TRAINING METHODS
NKPC supports training and behavior modification that achieves desired behavior change by focusing on the animal’s environment, physical well-being, and operant and classical interventions such as differential reinforcement of an alternative behavior, desensitization, and counter-conditioning. NKPC supports protocols necessary to modify problematic behavior which do not include punishment, pain, fear, physical force, coercion or compulsion in lieu of other effective interventions and strategies. The growing amount of evidence-based research (see below) indicates reward-based, positive reinforcement training methods and those utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis are not only the most humane but most effective methods to modify an animal’s behavior short and long term.
We oppose the use of aversive training tools or methods including punishment, dominance theory, intimidation, physical manipulation, pack leader theory, flooding, citronella spray collars, CO2/air sprays, shake cans and choke, prong and shock/stim /-ecollars. We support the strong body of evidenced based scientific research that indicates the use of these aversive training tools increase fear, anxiety, stress and behavioral issues, especially aggression.
